The extent of racial Violence and harassment is unclear. 139,000 incidents were recorded in 2005/06 in the British Crime Survey but there are often many incidents before an official report is made. Only 38% of racially aggravated offences are cleared up: cautioned, prosecution or convicted. Many people develop strategies to cope with Violence and harassment, but the need for effective support and to ensure the 'victim's perspective is not lost in the system' is essential.
